FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

What makes this program Catholic?

Everything! From "calling" King Jesus for help to reflecting on a saint quote related to that feeling, faith is woven into every aspect of this program. The framework is inspired by St. Teresa of Avila's depictions of the many rooms in the "Interior Castle" and Luke 17:21 - “The kingdom of God is within you.” My goal is that, through Interior Kingdom, connecting faith and feelings becomes natural for the next generation.

Unlike secular emotional regulation programs, we also don't emphasize shifting from negative to positive emotions as the goal, since we know that redemptive suffering has value. Instead, we focus on a return to peace where we encounter Jesus, scars and all.

However, it's not just a secular calm down corner with Jesus added in. It's better! The framework integrates the latest evidence-based research on emotional regulation and play therapy as well as an emphasis on co-regulation and adaptability for neurodiverse families.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

But what about discipline?

Correcting behavior is an important part of Catholic emotional regulation, but we don't need to employ harsh means or punishments to do this...and in fact, studies have shown that punitive disciplinary methods often prove ineffective over time.

What I teach in Interior Kingdom is known as Integrative Discipline, which centers disciplinary teaching where it's most effective - in safety and connection. Therefore, the final step in the return to peace is an opportunity for problem solving (what we should do next time we have big feelings), re-do (practicing that alternative behavior), and repair (apology)

What's more? Parents tell me that with Interior Kingdom, their kids often apologize or correct their behavior without them even having to ask. 🙌
